What an AMAZING week! I hope the kids enjoyed student appreciation week as much as I did :-) This group of students has been wonderful, I feel lucky to have had such a good year. Thank you! 3 more days! We worked ALL WEEK on becoming 3rd graders :) Next week, we continue to practice our skills in math, reading, writing, and grammar. Students will complete some science activities, memory book fun, practice our reading stamina, and enjoy our last 3 days together. RAZ Kids: Check your students blue folders for their RAZ Kids account! This is a GREAT resource to use this summer for FREE reading books and comprehension questions. Don't let your student slide back this summer! They each have their own login and I set it to a good reading level. Hey families! I am out of town tomorrow, so please call the office with any needs. Thank you to our wonderful field trip volunteers, even to those who were not able to come to the 3rd rescheduled time... I appreciate y'alls flexibility! We have 9 more days left, wow! Next week, the second grade teachers thought it would be fun to return the love we received last week, and have a student appreciation week! Please look in your students folder for a yellow paper that tells you about each fun activity we have planned for the end of the school day. Also, in their Thursday folders last week, a movie permission form went home about the movie Wonder. If you have lost this a need another copy before movie day (24th), just let me or your student know and I can print another. In their folders this week, many things went home! Reading passages with grades, math test, grammar work. Please clean the folder out and return :) If you are leaving before the last day of school, the 30th, please, PLEASE, let me know ahead of time! I am planning on sending students journals, work, folders, etc home the 29th and 30th. If you are leaving before then, I need to know so I can get you all their journals and memory books!! Poetry Rodeo: On Thursday, May 23rd 2nd graders are invited to dress up western/cowboy style for a Poetry Rodeo! We will walk across the street with the aid of parent volunteers to the Hill Country gym. The middle schoolers are going to create on-demand poetry for our students based on what our kids want the poem to be about and our kids will walk away with a poem created just for them. Next Week.... (May 20-24) Reading: Students are going to 3rd Grade Camp! We will review TEKS learned, practice our reading stamina, be independent workers, etc. Writing & Math: Students will work with a partner to complete a connect four choice board that review writing and math TEKS in fun, mind challenging ways. Science: Students continue to study the ocean habitat and living organisms. Technology: Students will use their iPads to complete a nearpod over time, chatterpix for a project, research links, camera, and Showbie. These are options they can choose from the writing and math choice board created. Happy Friday everyone! This week was amazing thanks to each one of YOU. (May 13-17) Reading: (I had the weeks mixed up, this week is Read Like a Third Grader!) Students will begin to learn how to read like a third grader! This involves reading passages and questions sometimes more than once, highlighting important information, answering comprehension questions for a grade, and using strategies to prove the answer choice. Expect some readings to come home with grades on them this week or next. This is to show students that using the strategies will help them ensure they are getting answers correct! Writing: Students will write a persuasive piece all about delicious donuts. Math: Students will add and subtract 3 digit and 4 digit numbers. They will create their own problems and make number sentences from a word problem. Science: All of second grade will dive deep into the ocean this week and learn about the different zones, animals, and how to preserve it. Technology: Students will use their iPads to complete a math 4 digit addition assignment on Showbie. They also have the opportunity to use it during FIT time twice for Xtramath or Epic App. Hello families! It has been another great week in room 42. Students have learned 3 strategies to solve multiplication problems. In 2nd grade, it is very pictorial in order to have a strong foundation before memorizing their multiplication/division facts. Below is an example of the strategies we learned. We learn it this way to show and understand that it does matter which order the numbers are placed; for example, 3x7 looks different than 7x3. Technology: Students will use their iPads to complete an assignment on Showbie during math once this week. They will use technology to research using the library links. They also have the opportunity to use it during FIT time twice for Xtramath or Epic App. Our field trip was rained out, but that didn't rain on our parade! We still continued to learn and have fun. Don't forget, the field trip was rescheduled for Wednesday, May 8th. (April 29-May 3) Reading: Dictionary Skills! We will focus all week on how to use the dictionary and how to order words alphabetically. We will also throw in suffixes into the mix. Writing: Students will start their next PBL project- a research project about biomes, living things, and survival. Should be engaging and informative. Math: We start our 2 week unit on multiplication and division. First, we will learn multiplication and 3 strategies to solve it- repeated addition, equal groups, and arrays. Social Studies: We will focus on other historical figures or groups of people that have shown positive characteristics. Technology: Students will use their iPads to complete an assignment on Showbie. They will use it to access Xtramath and Epic! once each next week. They also will use their iPads to research their animal/habitat for their PBL project; we research using kidrex and safesearch as well as pebble go and other library links. Happy Thursday everyone! This week flew by! The kiddos are loving the story of the Eanes family and how they traveled to Texas. Ask them to retell it to you! *Eanes History Field Trip: Our class will be going to the Eanes Marshall House and Eanes Elementary campus on Wednesday, April 24th. Please make sure your child wears their CCE shirt, comfortable pants and tennis shoes as well will be doing a lot of walking that day. Students also need to pack a NUT FREE sack lunch for that day as we will be eating there. Please make this completely disposable so we do not take anything back on the bus with us! **Food Drive: Student's received a bag today that is for the food drive. Students will learn about the past how our community was started as a settlement. We visit Eanes Elementary next week to see the original rock house school, Marshall home where Viola lived, and cemetery. Writing: Reading & Writing are combined this week for Eanes History PBL Unit. After Reading about Eanes history, students will write in their old journals. Math: Moving on from 2D, we will have a weeks focus of 3D figures. We have many fun activities planned :) Science: We will continue to talk about insects and their characteristics Technology: Students will use their iPads on the field trip to take photos and then turn it into a technology product to show their learning. They also will be able to read about Earth Day on Epic! If we have time, we will use the camera to go on a shape hunt around the school. Happy Fri-YAY! This has been an AMAZING week! Monday was Itty Bitty City Day and the kids had a blast being producers and consumers. Tuesday was our PBL (project based learning) kickoff where we traveled back in time to 1821 and began learning about the past and the Eanes community. Each day we are digging deeper on what it was like in the 1800's and how things have changed since then. Also, we talk about why those changes are made, what need are we meeting by making the changes? Check out the photos below! *Thursday Folders- a note was sent home explaining how to make an 'old' journal cover. This is going to be used for their written product of the PBL project. HERE is a link on how to make an 'old timey' journal page if needed. Really just crumple up paper, burn some edges maybe, poor coffee grinds or tea bags on it... dirty it up! You can use regular printer paper, a brown paper shopping bag, construction paper... Their journals will look like this --> Bring the paper in on Monday and I will turn it into a journal with the kiddos! **Thank you for volunteering for the upcoming field trip. Due to space, we can only have 4 parent volunteers per class. I took the first 4 that came in. I hope everyone understands! We will keep the other volunteers as back up incase anything happens the day of the field trip. I will email all parents to let you know some details about the field trip. Students will learn about the past and how technology & science have changed transportation, communication, and recreation. Each day we will read a nonfiction story about Eanes history. Writing: Reading & Writing are combined this week for Eanes History PBL Unit. After Reading about Eanes history, students will write in their old journals that you created over the weekend! Math: Students are experts on shapes! They will learn how to compose and decompose shapes as well as how to sort shapes by their attributes. Science: Students will learn about butterflies as we watch ours go through their life cycle in class. We have 4 cocoons now! Our mealworms are still in pupa stage, we are waiting for them to turn into beetles. Technology: Students will use their iPads once to read butterfly books on Epic! Happy Friday! We have been so busy creating our businesses! We have a salon, blacksmiths making tools, entertainment hub, massage studio, fortune tellers, and more! Next week we start our Eanes History Unit where the kiddos will travel back in time to see what the world was like and then learn about our community in the past. The 2nd grade teachers have made this unit into a PBL (Project Based Learning) and are very excited! Thursday, in their folders a letter went home asking for an 'old artifact.' Please bring in anything old you have (or reach out to family members!) We want the students to actually be able to see & touch artifacts from the past. Even if it's an old Nokia phone or something not that old, they will still be able to see how things have changed! They will be creating timelines from looking at photographs in books, discovering how history is recorded, and come up with their own questions about Eanes. Writing: Reading & Writing are combined this week for Eanes History PBL Unit. Math: Itty Bitty City is on Monday, then the other 4 days will be all about 2D Shapes! Students will learn that shapes have multiple names (polygon, quadrilateral, regular or irregular, etc) They will learn about their attributes (sides, faces) Students will complete many fun projects involving shape manipulatives like blocks and geoboards. Social Studies: While studying the past and our history, students will be working on their map skills using Eanes community maps from the past and present. Technology: Students will use their iPads for an old timey photo. They have a choice to use it twice this week for Xtramath or Epic! They also will use their iPads to research how things have changed over time. If we have time, we will also use the camera feature to take pictures of shapes that we see around the school. In your child's daily folder will be with a letter containing information on their product and the supplies they will need to create this product. All goods and services will be completed during class time only, we ask no items be made at home. Please have all items brought to the classroom by Tuesday, April 2nd. Keep in mind what we already have at school so you don't over purchase! Or they can always come up with ways to recycle what you already have! Students will choose what good or service they want to provide and they will run a city in our classrooms. The goal is to make a profit from our business, we will see what we learn about the real world in our mini city! Technology: Students will use Book Creator App to create a Mo Williams style book during writing. During math, students will research what it takes to create a product and how much it will cost. During math, we also have 2 personal finance games that can be found on my links page. Spring Break!!
